And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness (Malachi 3:3)
Malachi is the last book of prophets, which is the last book in the Old Testament. He brought God’s message to the nation of Israel just before what is often called the silent years; the four hundred years from his prophecy to the New Testament.
God sends him to the Jews who had just resettled in their land after being released from captivity in Babylon., His message comes to “the sons of Jacob” 3:6, but the message is directed to all of humanity through out all times. The day of God’s judgment is coming, and God will hold back His wrath if people will repent and return to Him.
Our attention is focused on two things: sons, and the spirit of Levi:
Levi was the third son of Jacob and Leah.
Moses and his brother, Aaron, were both descendants of the Tribe of Levi. When Joshua led the Israelites into the land of Caanan (Joshua 13:33), the sons of Levi were the only Israelite tribe that received cities but were not allowed to be landowners
“At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister to Him and to bless in His name, to this day. 9 Therefore Levi has no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; the LORD is his inheritance, just as the LORD your God promised him (Deuteronomy 10:8-9).
Levi would be chosen by God Himself to do service in the Temple worship.
As the New Testament and 21st century Church of the Lord Jesus, we need to be committed to serving God with the same spirit of Levi, as God’s own special people.
I Peter 2:9 says: But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you. who have been set aside to bring glory to Him.
Our purpose and duty is to serve. The real temple is our heart. Not just that physical pump inside our chest, but I mean from the heart of our spirit; which is where the Lord Jesus actually comes to dwell.
When we let Him live in our hearts we become part of a continual growing, and ever increasing relationship with Him.
God wants to live in a temple that He is pleased to dwell in.
He listens to us when we call upon Him, so we can…
….come boldly to the Throne of grace that we may obtain mercy, and find help in times of need (Hebrews 4:16”).
Jesus is our High Priest, and the captain of our salvation. We are His sons, who have access to all that He makes available for effective service for Him. That service includes impacting our world with his love, in letting people around us know the power of His love, and His saving grace.
In families children (natural sons) leave their worries to their fathers. As spiritual sons we learn to cast our cares upon Jesus; and there’s nothing we can’t bring to Him - “Casting all your cares on Him because He cares for you” (I Peter 5:7).
As sons and children of God, the process of purification is one that is on going. It is not always an easy process, but the act of yielding ourselves to our Heavenly Father, guarantees that result will end in pleasure to God, and satisfied sons.
